Some photos of the Killdeer that are living in the field near work.
Parent Killdeer guarding the nest. Males and females look the same and both sit on the nest so it is impossible to tell if this is Dad or Mom.
Parent Killdeer
Parent Killdeer guarding the nest by running away and faking an injury in what is known as a "broken wing" act.
The nest. Being a ground nesting bird, it is very hard to find the nest and is (I would imagine) often walked or driven over before it is even seen. The Killdeer will lay an average of 4 eggs.
Unfortunately, where there is only one visible Killdeer on this site and this pile of feathers as well, it is pretty safe to assume that either Mom or Dad met up with a predator.
